HINTS AND TIPS FOR THE BEST KIDS’BIRTHDAY PARTY EVER

Many parents dread the thought of hosting a child’s birthday party.  What if the kids get bored?  What if they don’t like the food?  What happens if a child hurts themselves and we don’t know how to get hold of their parents?  Will the rain stay away?  Will the entertainment be fabulous or a flop?  Lots of questions to be asked .....are there any answers?.

Chill.  Have a look at these easy ways of ensuring you have a stress-free day – and the kids have a celebration to remember.

·         Make sure you have a contingency plan in case of inclement weather.

·         Put all the necessary details on the birthday party invites (eg directions to the venue, contact numbers).

·         To make life easy for guests, tie some balloons onto the gatepost to highlight where the party is being held.

·         To make life less complicated for busy parents, try and make your party themes as simple and as general as possible.  For example, a superheroes party will be easier to plan for than a specific Superman one and a fairy party will be easier than a specific Tinkerbell party.

·         Make sure you have some spare batteries for cameras/toys etc handy and remember to charge your camera, mobile phone, video camera, iPod etc well ahead of time.

·         Keep a list of the children attending the birthday party plus their caregivers’ contact details.

·         Don’t tear your hear out when it comes to the birthday cake.  Seriously, the children won’t care if the icing is a bit skew or the decorations aren’t perfect.  Why not buy a slab of sponge cake from the supermarket and get the birthday girl or boy to help decorate it ?.  Say goodbye to all the time and effort in baking a cake – and hello to convenience.  For an effortless icecream cake, simply fill a shallow container with softened icecream and decorate with crushed malted puffs, choc chips and chopped up marshmallows (cut using regular scissors).  You can also use whipped cream with a bit of food colouring to pipe decorations, wording etc onto icecream – it freezes hard and is easy to work with.

·         When it comes to food, keep it simple, easy to eat and healthy (OK, some of it anyway!).  Single mouthfuls are best – such as veggie sticks, pieces of fruit, mini muffins, triangles of fairy bread or mini sandwiches, cocktail sausages, small chicken kebabs and little squares of pizza.  Keep choices limited to around four or five different food items.

·         Prepare a timeline for the party – allowing around 15 or so minutes per activity (and always have extra activities up your sleeve in case.  If you’re doing traditional party games such as pass the parcel, always include a lolly in each wrapping and make sure each child gets a turn to unwrap.  Some other traditional games include pinning the tail on the donkey, musical bumps and treasure hunts as well as icing cupcakes, face painting and making paper plate masks.

·         Goodie bags don’t have to be over the top to be a huge success.  What about a bag of wholesome cookies instead of a packet full of sugary sweets?.   For a totally different slant, what about giving the children a party pack containing birdseed and vegetable seeds which will encourage them to get back to nature and be outdoors.  Also, be mindful of things that will be very messy in the car on the way home (eg sherbet, melting chocolate etc).  Party supply shops will have a huge range of party favours for inspiration eg stickers, themed gifts, plastic toys, kid’s make-up etc.  Have a few spare party packs on hand in case siblings arrive at pick-up time or the guests want to take an extra one for a brother or sister at home.

·         To keep things neat and orderly, set aside a dedicated area for gifts near the entrance of the birthday party, or organise a big box or a table on which gifts can be placed.   When it comes to the ‘thank-you’s’ – a fun way of doing it is to write a note on a balloon using a permanent marker and place the balloon in the party pack or post it to the guests afterwards.

A party supply shop will have a huge range of ideas and themes for birthday parties, plus a host of accessories, gifts, balloons, invitations, themed party kits, games etc
