Earth Escapes Impact By Set Of Asteroids … This Time Around

Planet continued to beat the odds as it dodged two meteors passing through its orbit Wednesday. The narrow escape brought attention to a coalition of scientists and astronauts planning future space missions to prevent the destruction of mankind by an asteroid. The latest skywatching technology shows the Earth travelling through a swarm of "near-earth objects." As a result, mankind is starting to understand its precarious existence. To gain knowledge about how to prevent a collision, NASA is accelerating projects that aim to pinpoint and follow near-earth objects. America's space program has an executive order to develop a plan for sending astronauts to a neighborhood asteroid. A National Aeronautics and Space Administration contractor said it might be possible by 2019.

Meteors occupy Earth's private space

Two small asteroids passed through the space between the Earth and moon Wednesday. Nearby passes are a regular occurrence but most individuals would not know it, said Donald Yeomans, manager of NASA's Near Planet Network, in a CNN interview. The main difference with the near-miss Wednesday was the asteroids, anywhere from 20 to 60 feet in diameter, had been tracked for several days. During a regularly scheduled search, The Catalina Sky Survey near Tucson, Ariz. Spotted the asteroids Sunday morning, according to NASA. CNN quoted Yeomans as saying the current arsenal of telescopes devoted to near-earth objects is inadequate. Until efforts to identify near-earth objects increased throughout the 1990s, he said people on planet didn't fully understand the consequences.

Video simulates devastating occasion

A unified global response to the asteroid threat is imperative to the survival of civilization, according to the Association of Space Explorers. Canadian astronaut and ASE president Chris Hadfield told the Toronto Star that Earth is "rolling the dice that the big one is not coming right away". In 2008, the United Nations received a report from the ASE defining the choices accessible for deflecting a killer meteor. Current technology is up to the task of deflecting an asteroid from the Earth's path, as outlined by the report. The most likely answers is arranging for a spacecraft to collide with the asteroid, decelerating it so that by the time it reaches Earth's orbit, the planet could have already passed. If scientists were able to predict that an meteor will impact the Earth in 10 to 18 years, planning for a quest would need to start now. So far mankind has not proven itself capable of such foresight. If that is the case, the video below imagines what is in store.

Human being exploration of asteroid in the works

The feasibility of human spaceflight to an asteroid by 2025 is being investigated. NASA's effort is a response to orders from the president that redirects the objectives of the U.S. space program from its focus on the Moon. Even though politicians are warned of the danger posed by asteroids, the Houston Chronicle reports that many in Congress would rather relive the glory of the Apollo moon landings that happened 40 years ago. Nevertheless, the business charged with building the newest Orion spacecraft, Lockheed Martin, is already planning an meteor quest it says could launch by 2019. The adventure would be a fact-finding mission. The data collected would be used to gain a better understanding of how to keep away from a potential asteroid impact.
