What is the best kind of hand wood shaver to use to shave down interior hollow doors 1/2 in to 1in?
I just bought some 6 panel interior door slabs and they are a 1in too long. I've never put in interior slabs, but I'm up to the challenge since I have put in cabinets before.....I want to shave the bottoms to make it fit as perfect as I can, but dont know if their is a specific brand hand wood shaver thats would be perfect! Any feedback is greatly appreciated!
Recently hung (hanged?) similar doors. which needed trimming.
Would not attempt to plane or "shave " off that much material.
A good block plane is helpful to clean up cut edges & to trim the sides in small amounts for a good side to side fit.
A circular saw or even a jigsaw run along a straightedge will do it.
Wrap the cut line w/ tape & score right on the line w/ a utility knife to get a clean edge.
These doors are plugged on the ends w/ a glued in strip of pressed wood which is only about an inch or so deep.
If you cut too close to the end of the block , it can come loose .
If the doors are pre drilled for handsets, consider the height the handle will be if you cut entirely from the bottom.
I ended up trimming top & bottom to preserve the "look " of the doors & get the knobs at the same height as the latch recesses in the doorframes.
A few plugs had to be cut off to get all the handles to match.
The door "skin" is easily peeled from the plug & after some cleanup reglued into place.
Some work, but since all the doors are adjacent to each other it looks
better when the handsets & horizontal piece between the top & bottom panels are aligned.
Best regards
