Can a graphite shaft go bad?
Two or three years ago, I bought a new Grafalloy shaft for my Taylor made r580. The stock shaft just felt weak and when i would hit the ball well, i felt a total power drain as the shaft just couldn't handle the swing speed and hitting the ball at high velocity. I expect to be hitting about 280-290 at the time and was coming up about 20 or 30 yards short. I got the new x-stiff shaft and it was VERY stiff and felt great. I really haven't been able to play much over this time, probably 10 to 20 rounds total since getting this shaft about 3 years ago to the date. Now, the thing just feels more flexible and I routinely put great swings and "crush" the ball dead center but the ball just doesn't fly. So, can a graphite shaft go bad like this (I could understand from use but I barely used the thing)? Has anyone had this happen or heard of this? Thanks.
The chances of the problem of distance being a flaw in your shaft is less than a percent. Carbon fiber has been through more in space than in your garage or den could do, it however can be damaged and cracked if you abuse the shafts by storing high weighted objects on or around. The problem lies however at a 99% probability that loss of distance is a direct result of a change for the worst in your swing. I would purchase a swing speed indicator. I recommend this for anyone who golfs at a "once in a while" level. Then you can warm up at the range and reach the speed you were previous to your time off. This will be a guideline for you to reach at the range prior to wasting your money in frustration because your not the "guy who crushed the ball last year". This also will allow you to realize the good feeling on the ball from the other. A lot of times we think we are swinging faster, but we are swinging HARDER not faster. As you golf you establish better and better timing, when you take time off you loose the timing and thus try to hit harder and harder deeming the same result, more and more loss of distance and or power. The swing speed indicator will help you groove your timing to what it was before you took the time off, this tool should accelerate your skill to the level it was prior. Hope this helps.
