So if you were found with it east of texas, you were breaking old bootlegging laws, that i believe were brought in from the old prohibition days in the US, where liquor was illegal, so laws were brought in to stop people bringing it in from elsewhere (Canada/Mexico), manufacturing or transporting liquor.
Was there a real bandit?? I don't know, i've never heard of one, I'm sure there have been a lot of bootleggers in America's history, but sadly i doubt anything like the movie ever happened.. I would be interested to hear if there was though, perhaps someone who knows more than me will let you know..
